THE WAY IT WAS: Mt. Clemens Pottery “Mildred”

Mt. Clemens Pottery, Michigan, made lots of dinnerware but this was the most popular.  It was sold in the dime stores for very little money.  So, today it is vintage and very collectible. It is a string from the past and comfortable to have in my cupboard as I can remember my grandmother having this set in the 40’s.

OLD THINGS: Charles Chips Can

Did you ever work in an office which had Charles Chips delivered?  Every week a new filled can would arrive for snacks, I think, for those who worked through lunch or had to work after quitting time and needed a bit of sustenance.   Coffee was just not enough.  SOLD  c

THE WAY IT WAS: Mendets (Really)

Did you ever see a repaired pot?   Found an old copper pot mended several times and found it to be curious and amazing with metal patches.   Who would have thought it?

Living frugally with parents who were ten and twelve years old during the worst years of the Depression,  I still had never seen or heard of mending your pots.  Till now, I found this original mending set.   In that era they never threw anything away, just mend it for further use or find another use for it.

VINTAGE COLLECTIBLES: Blakely Carousel Glasses

Blakely Gas Stations had an incentive program in Arizona in the 50’s and I believe early 60’s.   Receive a glass with purchase of a certain amount of gas.   Few remember the carousel glasses as the most popular was the Arizona Cacti.   Collectible were 8 different cactus, a pitcher and a wood carrier.  Dinnerware was also included in the cacti promotion.

THE WAY IT WAS: Cookie Jars

Do you know someone who collected Cookie Jars?   Almost every pottery and glass company made them.  You could find a Davy Crocket, Hull Apple, Cinderella, Li’l Red Riding Hood, Looney Tunes characters, Dutch Girl, Owl, and even a Cookie House.  There were hundreds of designs and many are still used today.  You could find them matching your kitchen pottery/metal cookware as well as tableware.  Some manufacturers developed sets, cookie jar, grease jar, stove top salt and pepper, cream and sugar,  wall pocket and matchstick holder.  It was the pride of the kitchen.  It is a comfortable feeling to see a cookie jar like the one your mother had.

THE WAY IT WAS: VINTAGE PURINTON POTTERY

Vintage hand painted pottery; they even made tumblers to match the set.  Purinton was the family name of potters from East Liverpool, Ohio area.  A patent was obtained for this company for a new way to pour molds called slipware.   Originated in late 30’s and opened a larger factory in the 40’s.  They continue to be a useful collectible.
